About Lion's Mane
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) gets its name from its appearance. The white to light-brown spikes growing out of a large, stalkless ball (which can measure up to 15 inches or more) suggest the shaggy coat of a male lion. The mushroom is a great option for cuisine, because of its meaty texture and propensity for absorbing flavorful sauces in stir-fried dishes. It’s often used as a substitute for seafood, because it has the texture of lobster or crab. Lion's mane grows naturally in many places around the globe. It is most commonly found growing on dead trees like oak, maple, sycamore, beech and walnut. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners have long used lions mane to treat digestive disorders and many other ailments.
Health Benefits
Long valued in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), lion's mane mushrooms are now attracting buzz in the Western world for their neuroprotective and neurogenerative properties. Research suggests that such health benefits are realized whether these mushrooms are eaten fresh or ingested as dehydrated powder. This superfood stimulates production of novel compounds that promote the growth and regeneration of neurons. Healthy neural connections are essential to information retention and the ability to master new tasks. The decline of both functions is often part of the aging process and figures in such devastating diseases as Alzheimer’s. The complex polysaccharides in lion’s mane also show efficacy in balancing blood sugar, regulating both blood cholesterol and pressure, healing and preventing GI ulcers and treating cancer.
